Self-Government 80mety, the President and Vice-
President of which are University and School
Professors, and whose membership includes all the
Chinese teachers at the University.
A recent case has occurred in which, in
consequence of a quarrel with an American member
་
of the Canadian Methodist Mission, the students at
the Mission School, after going on strike, fomented
a serious agitation against the Mission, issuing
circulars of a most offensive nature, and Mr Hewlett
apprehends that the movement will assume serious
proportions leading to trouble sooner or later.
He adds that the officials are fully alive to
the situation, but that there is not a single
man in Szechuan capable of coping with serious
anti-foreign agitations.
Concerning the Canadian Mission, whose
treatment of their servants apparently led to the
initiation of the present movement, Mr Hewlett
considers that the members or the mission cannot
be regarded as entirely free from blame. Your
Lordship will no doubt consider the advisability
of conveying to the Headquarters of the Mission
a warning of the extreme care which it is incumbent
upon their members in Szechuan to take to prevent
giving sinuse for any further development of the
servant agitation,
I shall not fail to report to Your Lordship
in due course the nature of whatever replies are
received from the Superintendents of British
Kissions in Szechuan to Mr Hewlett's request for
information
